AFUE (Annual fuel utilization efficiency) is the way in which furnaces are measured.
Older furnaces are known to operate around 60% to 70% AFUE. This means that the remaining 30-40% is lost in the vent piping.
Newer high-efficiency furnaces can operate as high as 98% AFUE, meaning that much less energy is being wasted. New high-efficiency furnaces also consume up to one-third less natural gas than older models. More efficient, less consumption equals lower bills and is even better for the environment.
Your air conditioner has its own form of measurement as well: SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).
The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system is and the lower your utility bills are. Older systems operate around 8 SEER.
New systems in Kentucky have to be a 14 SEER or higher and some of these systems have a SEER rating of 25 or higher.
